Got a begger?

One of the main reasons dog's are overweight is because we can't say no, when they turn on that high pitched whine and you look into those sad, wide eye as they beg for food. This is one of the most common discipline issues that dog owners face.

With strong will power this is something that can be fixed quite easily, this will not only help your dog's waist line but reinstate to your dog that you are the pack leader.

Although it may seem obvious, never give in to a begging dog. Dog's do not beg for food because they are hungry, they beg because they have done it before and know that it works. Dogs are very smart animals and will already know what the boundaries are with you - and once they know what they can get away with they will continue to do so. When you give in to your dog and reward them with food you are rewarding them for that behaviour.

To stop this, start by ignoring your dog. Your dog is not starving, you are the one that feeds them remember! Your dog is seeking you attention so ignoring this unwanted behaviour will show them that they are not going to get what they want. Even just talking to your dog is giving them affection and attention, so stopping this all together is your first big step! Practise no touch, no talk, no eye contact!

Constancy is key in every form of dog training, you must remember that dogs, like humans, don't change over night. Be consistent with training, stick to your guns and be patient. You may not notice a change straight away but if you continue, your hard work will pay off.

Always remember, your dog is not starving - be patient and consistent.
