What is a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever?!

Well…. A Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever looks like this…

..Similar to a smaller Golden Retriever.

They originated from Canada and are a mix of retrievers and working spaniels. It is believed they accompanied their masters from Great Britain to Nova Scotia, hence their name. They were a breed developed to lure (toll) ducks and are a very skillful creation. The Retriever was used to take on the skills of a fox when hunting; their masters would throw a stick parallel to the shore and very quickly, but without barking, the Toller would retrieve it. It may take a few times, but doing this makes the ducks or geese extremely curious to approach the shore. Once the inquisitive ducks are within shooting range the hunter will call his dog back, shoots the target and the Toller then retrievers the catch.
They are a very loyal and devoted family pet also and very easy to train. Aside from their amazing skill you can’t see past their adorable looks and heart melting eyes!

Food Aggression.

Food aggression is a common problem amongst all breeds of dogs. It can also develop into more serious problems such as the dog becoming obsessive over their toys & other objects.
Food aggression is a dog’s way of trying to claim the food as their own and this is a strong display of dominant behavior. This behavior can vary in severity whether it being a growl or snarl or just scoffing the food down before anyone can take it.  This can lead to health problems as well if your dog is eating too fast and making themselves sick.
Keeping your dog calm around food is a great way to counter act this behavior. Mixing things up can also help this issue. For example, use different bowls and feed at different times. Make sure to always feed your dog after you have eaten, this will show your dog that you are the pack leader and in charge of the situation. Project calm and assertive behavior when your dog is showing dominant behavior, this can also help to calm your dog down. Never reward your dog with food when they are in an excited state.
Being able to take things out of your dogs mouth can be very helpful in particular cases, especially if your dog has something dangerous. It is also especially important if there are young children involved. From a young age you should always teach your dog that you are allowed to place your hand around, in and take away their food bowl.

If you feel your dog has an issue with food aggression or any type of dominating behavior it is best to seek the advice of an animal trainer or behaviorist to learn the safe ways to approach this.

Joe & Georgia - Dogs of the Month.

So it would seem our reign as King & Queen of Dogs Country Club is nearing it's end as February draws to a close!
We've had a great time and believe me, we have taken it for all we can too!
With this being our last blog we thought we would leave it on a high note with a few funny ones!

Until we wear the crowns again -

Joe & Georgia!

A guy wanted to take his Cocker Spaniel into a restaurant with him, so he put on dark glasses and had the dog lead him into the establishment.
The waiter said "Hey!, you can't bring a dog in here."
The man indignantly claimed "I'm blind! ... this is my Seeing Eye dog!"
"You're trying to tell me" said the waiter, "that this Cocker Spaniel is a Seeing Eye dog?"
"What???!!", cried the man, "they gave me a Cocker?"

________

Question:  Why do Cocker Spaniels wag their tails?
Answer:  Because no one else will do it for them!

Have you ever heard of...

…of a Pocket Beagle?

The original of the Beagles is the Pocket Beagle. Named for its size and the fact it was carried around by hunters in their saddles bags, this little pooch was used as a Hunter. Their compact size was a great advantage as they could easily travel under bushes, shrubs and smaller spaces to hunt smaller animals such as rabbits.

They would generally not grow larger than 30cm and weigh from as little as 3kgs up to 7kgs.They look similar to a small fox hound or a shrunk down Beagle that we know of today. Their main distinct feature though is their howl, something you will hear when they are on the hunt!
Sadly it’s believed these original sized beagles were bred out into the common known larger but the Pocket Beagle has been re-created and is being bred again.

Gemma & Frodo Update!

Good morning all, we thought we better quickly get back to our blog before Joe & Georgia stole it! Geez, you give a pair of dogs an award and then they think they own the place!
It's okay, we'll let them enjoy it while they can, we don't think they realise it's almost the end of February anyway! They know we love them!

Anyway, enough about Joe & Georgia, back to us... we just wanted to spend this morning showing off our new haircuts. With summer well and truly settled in it was time to trim down for the warmer weather.
Did you know that use pooches cool down through the pads in our feet and the underneath of our bodies? That's why you may find us digging in our water or pulling up the top of the earth to lay in the cooler dirt below. So if you're planning to get your puppy clipped now is defiantly a good time, this will not only allow your pooch to cool down a lot quicker but they may also look as pretty as we do after a hair cut!

If you're planning on coming down for a tour or your 4 legged friend is coming to visit us soon you may even get to see us strut our stuff with our new hair do's!

Until next week,
Stay Safe-

Gemma & Frodo.
